Ayako’s Wedding and The Emperor’s Impending Abdication Could Spell Trouble For the Japanese Monarchy

Emporer Akihitio, one of the most loved rulers of the oldest monarchy in the world, has already announced that he will abdicate his throne on April 30, 2019. He plans to pass the crown to his son, Crown Prince Naruhito. The Japanese imperial law said that the throne can only pass to a male heir.

Prince Naruhito has just one son, Prince Hisahito, who is only 12 years old. Prince Hisahito will be the only male heir left to carry on the royal lineage.
