An Australian woman had developed an extremely dangerous habit: not removing her mascara correctly. She was not washing it off with makeup remover, and just continually putting on mascara every day.
After a few days of extreme pain under her eyes, she decided to go visit her eye doctor for a checkup to be sure, according to what was published in the May issue of journal Ophthalmology. And during the checkup, she admitted a scary fact: 25 years of mascara use without really removing her makeup.
“I had fallen into a bad habit of wearing a lot of makeup and not washing it off” – Theresa Lynch
The doctor looked under her eyelids to complete his examination, and here he found huge dark pigmented lumps that had started to form in the conjunctiva. Which is the part of the eye that is transparent, where the membrane starts to form around the eyelid and the part of the eye that is white.
Some of the lumps were evening breaking through and damaging her eyesight. This was due to the inflammation being so sore and swollen, it was causing conjunctivitis and causing severe damage to her cornea. All parts of your eye that are essential for keeping a healthy vision. The eyelids from being so swollen, start to become too heavy for patients to open which can result in permanent vision loss.
Had it became infected, then it may have resulted in permanent blindness. Luckily for Mrs. Lynch on this occasion, her doctors were able to remove all the lumps and return her vision to normal. This however required a 90-minute procedure which gave Mrs. Lynch eyelid scarring which will never completely heal. Something that all could have been avoided had she removed her mascara correctly!
