The Film Was Expensive, Especially For the Time
Rubies and gold are everywhere in The Wizard of Oz, but Emerald City was built with a lot of green—specifically, $2.7 million. In inflation-adjusted dollars, that’s almost $50 million.
While that might be a reasonable amount for most films today, that was orders of magnitude above what had been spent on films before.
It’s about five times the budget for the 1933 version of King Kong, for example.
