Separated At Birth, These Triplets Were Part Of A Bizarre Social Experiment

Dr. Peter Neubauer, a psychoanalyst who was obsessed with learning the extent to which the human psyche was formed by genetics versus environment, ran the Manhattan’s Child Development Centre. The twins and triplets who were born to unwed mothers and placed up for adoption provided Dr. Neubauer with the ideal test subjects for his ongoing experiments into the nature versus nurture debate. By placing newborn twins and triplets into homes with different environments, the doctor could surmise that the similar traits that both twins, or all triplets, developed were the result of their identical genetic make-up and the ones that were different could be attributed to upbringing. To purposely separate twins and triplets and document their growth and development without their knowledge sounds incredulous to us today, but Dr. Neubauer’s experiment was perfectly legal at the time.
