Leda and the Swan, by Michelangelo
Famed Italian artist Michelangelo painted an erotic scene from ancient mythology that was has become lost to time. Or, perhaps it was purposely destroyed. The painting was inspired by the mythical story of the god Jupiter who turns himself into a swan to seduce Leda, the Queen of Sparta.
In fact, the painting depicts the explicit sexual encounter between the swan and the queen. It was said to be so erotic and salacious with full nudity, that the good people of the Renaissance era were shocked. Some claim that the painting was destroyed because the subject matter was too erotic.
