Squanto Had Nothing to Return To
When Squanto finally returned to his village, he found no one there. The illness that swept through the New World had hit his village particularly hard, leaving Squanto as the sole surviving member of his village.
Nearby, some of the other villages that were part of the Wampanoag confederation weathered the epidemic slightly better, though it is now estimated that as much as three-quarters of the entire Patuxet Indians perished. The surviving Patuxet formed their own village with two kings as their leaders, brothers Massasoit and Quadequina. With his village gone, Squanto joined theirs.
