Historians today are not in agreement as to what disease spread through the land, or even if it was just one disease. Written reports of the time list symptoms such as fever, headaches, sores, nosebleeds, and jaundice. From these reports, earlier historians theorized that yellow fever was the culprit, but today’s historians now discount that notion.
They believe the illness was from the plague, viral hepatitis, smallpox, or leptospirosis. No matter the name of the disease, the outcome remained the same. Thousands of Native Americans were dead and entire villages were either wiped out or decimated.
