Hunt’s Scheme Didn’t Go As Planned
When Hunt arrived in Spain with a boatload of Native American slaves to sell, he was met with anger and contempt. Leading the opposition to the trafficking of humans was the Catholic Church. In fact, some versions of the Squanto story say that he was able to escape from Hunt and the real possibility of a lifetime in slavery thanks to the Catholic friars who helped to free him and eventually secure passage for him to England.
