Squanto was a kidnapping victim. In 1614, six years prior to the time the Pilgrims voyaged to Massachusetts from England to escape religious persecution, an Englishman, Thomas Hunt, and his men raided Squanto’s village and abducted Squanto and many others from the village.
He loaded them onto his ship and sailed back to Europe with them. Instead of returning to his native England, Hunt took his prisoners to Spain. He planned to sell them as slaves.
