As all this was happening with Squanto and the Native Americans, the Pilgrims were dealing with their own troubles. While in England, a group of Puritans were experiencing religious persecution. Then, in 1607, the Archbishop Tobias Matthew raided the homes of several prominent Puritans and some of the members of the congregation were jailed.
That was the push that the Puritans needed to plan their exodus from England. The group first travelled to the Netherlands in 1609, but they were still within reach of the English crown there. Then they heard of a place where they could go to be totally free…the New World.
