The Dog That Cannot Bark

Ross Pollack | February 24th, 2019

There are many different types of dogs and species in the world, all of them have their own features and many of them are completely unique. There is one canine that has a feature that may really surprise you: the Basenji dog breed cannot actually bark. Normally a dog that is found in central Africa, the Basenji can’t bark due to their larynx having an extremely unusual structure. But other people argue that it is simply because they are the oldest domesticated dog: with evidence that even the Pharaohs kept them as pets.

Due to this fact, the Basenji is known commonly as the “Bark-less Dogs” and can actually only produce a low yodeling sound. It is actually kind of lucky for any Basenji’s owners as these dogs are very moody, they would probably be barking all the time if they could. Depending on their mood they regularly will growl or may even let out a howl. So even though they cannot bark, you will see them having multiple mood swings & they will let you know about them.

Another unique characteristic to the dog that cannot bark is that they only have one breeding season when most dogs actually have two or more. Generally, they are quite quiet and very athletic, you will mostly find them to be between a dark brown and dark hazel color with almond-shaped eyes. The Basenji dog is also known for being very curious and extremely attentive to their owners.

As a result, they are obedient and get on very well with children unless they get bored. If things get boring for them, then you will find that they stop listening to you at all. One thing to remember around the dog that cannot bark is that they are extremely active and love to play. They hail from the jungle regions so are pretty independent and will roam around.

And if they could not become any cooler, these dogs do not really have a dog odor at all, so if you wanted to tame a pretty stress-free dog then the Basenji is most likely the best option for you.
