The Deadly Dynamite Tree

Samuel Reason | January 19th, 2019

There is actually a tree that exists covered in poisonous spikes which is capable of dropping exploding dynamite fruit on your head. And to make matters worse the explosions launches spikes & seeds to launch out into the air at over 150 miles per hour, sending them a good 100 feet.

It may sound like something from a fantasy novel, but the sandbox tree is a reality that needs to be avoided for some people in the world. If you are a farmer in central or South America, then it is something you have to watch out for, especially when the fruits ripen. The ripen fruits explode and easy penetrate skin or even may break a poorly made window.

Growing over 30 meters high and 1 meter wide, the sandbox tree is an impressive feat of nature. It is easily recognized because its bark is covered in spikes which are a deep dark brown color. Locals though do find the spikes fascinating, and you can find many ornaments or furniture decorated with the spikes across South America.

The fruit is a green color and may resemble a small pumpkin, but do not make the mistake of thinking it is just as tasty. The sandbox tree is poisonous and these fruits can easily make you sick. It is actually the seeds of the fruit that will cause vomiting and stomach cramps if ingested, even so, you will find these seeds being used as tribal earrings.

As with all things in your environment, to survive you have to adapt them into tools you can use. Locals have been known to use the poison found in the sandbox tree to incapacitate small mammals or large fish.

Definitely not a tree that you would want as a houseplant or in your backyard, but the sandbox tree consistently ranks in the top 10 deadliest plants on Earth.
