That Day A Boy Impersonated A Police Officer For Over Five Hours

Samuel Reason - January 5th, 2020

In 2009 a strange story appeared in the local Chicago news, one of a 14-year-old boy was able to impersonate a police officer for over 5 hours before anyone knew what was up. He was actively patrolling the city in a car, and the craziest part of this story? It was not even the first time he had been accused of doing this.

Allegedly he pulled someone over and even investigated several domestic disturbances before anyone caught on to the act and the real police took him down. The usual fun of being a teenager did not interest this kid, he was not out making music or skating around town, he wanted to be a police officer. One bored kid somehow was able to get his hand on a regulation officer uniform for Chicago.

This allowed him to casually walk into the Grand Crossing District police station, where he was able to get hold of a ticket book, a police radio and even jump in a ride with an actual patrolling officer. He patrolled the streets of Chicago for several hours before a sergeant thought something was odd and asked him a couple of questions. During these queries, the sergeant realized his true identity and that the teenager was not, in fact, a real officer of the law.

The boy was able to follow procedures by the book which let him blend in with the real officers quite easily. This was because he had joined a police explorer program and spent a lot of time shadowing officers to learn about the job.

Unfortunately, it is a tragic story of heartbreak, as the boy has become infuriated by the idea of being a cop, the reason being that he is technically homeless. His mother threw him out of the house several months ago for being defiant, and the kid lives with a Reverend. Rev. Watkins said the arrest was shocking due to the scene but that he was not surprised by it, according to him, the teenager is crying out for help and acting out as a result.

Impersonating a police officer is a serious crime though and he is now facing felony charges. Questions have to be asked around the officer who didn’t notice he was patrolling around Chicago with a kid – surely the impersonation could not have been that good?
