Runestones are raised stones that are most often memorials and were originally brightly colored. Runic inscriptions were created from a non-standardized alphabet called ‘runor’.
There are thousands of runestones, with most of the Viking era ones found in Sweden. Some of them list names of people who were in Viking expeditions or have records of warfare. They were also used to mark territory, and were used for other purposes as well, such as to tell about inheritances and construction.
