There is evidence that Vikings had mail armor, that was likely worn over thick clothing, but this was expensive and mostly worn by people of high status or professional warriors.
They may have also had lamellar armor, or armor made from small rectangular plates of iron sewn together. Low-ranking Viking warriors may have worn quilted cloth, linen or hemp canvas, as well as woolen cloth. Leather was likely used as well, though this was also expensive. Vikings also traded and plundered for foreign weapons and armor.
