Vikings in North America/Leif Erikson
Leif Ericson, not Christopher Columbus, was the first European to set foot on the North American continent.
It’s possible that a merchant sighted land west of Greenland and Leif Ericson rescued two shipwrecked men from there after he was blown off course on a trip from Norway to Greenland. Leif then bought the same merchant’s ship and gathered a crew, and went on an expedition back to this land. He landed at several places, before finally finding a place to camp for the winter—a place full of vines and grapes, which they named Vinland.
