Poetry was actually very important for Vikings. There are two different types: Eddaic poetry and Skaldic poetry. Eddic poetry’s authors are anonymous, with a simple meter. They were minstrel poems, passed on through the centuries. These included mythological poems as well as poems about mortal heroes. Skaldic poetry’s authors are not anonymous, and the poems are ornate.
These poems were composed for kings or nobility, to honor them. Poems can even be found on runestones! J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, was inspired by Eddaic poetry and incorporated their concepts in his work.
