Bartholdi planned for the arm to be exhibited at America’s Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. Since he couldn’t finish the entire statue by the nation’s birthday, he wanted to at least give its people a glimpse of what it would be like.

However, the arm was not completed until August, near the end of the Exposition when attendance was low.
