The Panic of 1873 in America had caused a widespread economic downturn and it was difficult to fund the pedestal project.

To speed up the fundraising process, one New York newspaper offered to print the name of every contributor, no matter how small the contribution. Meager donations poured in from across the country, from school children to the elderly, all of whom wanted to see their names in the New York World.
