15. Joan of Arc (1412-1431)
A hero of France during the Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, said that she received holy visions telling her to throw her support to Charles VII in his efforts to free France from the control of England. Charles VII allowed Joan, still just a teenager, to lead troops to the siege of Orleans and, to his surprise, she brought the siege to a quick end. Her continued military victories cleared the way for Charles VII ascension to the French throne and the eventual French victory over the English.
Joan of Arc was captured by the English, however, and put on trial. On May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake.
