10. Indira Ghandi (1917-1984)
The only woman to serve as the Prime Minister of India, Indira Ghandi was a popular, yet controversial leader who served four consecutive terms, from 1966 to 1984. Under her guidance, India won a war with Pakistan and the country of Bangladesh was formed.
She advocated for a centralized government. Indira Ghandi gave orders to her Sikh bodyguards to raid a Sikh temple during an uprising. This angered the bodyguards and they plotted and carried out her assassination in 1984.
