You Probably Use Most Of These Things Every Day, and They Wouldn’t Exist Without NASA

Land Mine Removal

Land mines are one of the most dangerous weapons in the known world. They can detonate with just enough pressure. Each year, over 20,000 have died and countless others have been seriously injured due to land mine detonation. These typically occur in war torn regions of the world. However, in times when conflict is no longer existent, the importance of land mine removal is much greater than before. Thickol Propulsion decided to use NASA’s extra rocket fuel to produce a flare that would destroy landmines safely. How, you ask? The flare is designed to burn a hole through the mine and disable its detonation ability.

Keeping the World Safe: Each year, NASA donates an undisclosed amount of rocket fuel so more of these flares are produced. The Israeli Special Forces is one group in particular that uses these flares to disarm mines in their country.
