During the mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials, two dogs were accused as well for belief that they were associated with the Devil. One young girl accused a neighboring dog of bewitching her and the dog was immediately sentenced. The dog was later posthumously deemed innocent.

It was believed that witches would take village animals and ride them into the dark to witch meetings in the country side. If an animal looked sick or weary in the morning, it was often said that animal was “hag-ridden” the previous night.
