17th century Salem was mainly infused with Puritan values. The Church and Christian beliefs highly influenced the Puritan religion. During the time of the Salem Witch Trials, Salem was struggling with its religious values. It was believed that the Devil was more likely to overtake women and children whom were weak in their religion and values.
Therefore, many of the accused witches were women. More so, those who were accused were members of society that were most likely shunned in some way. One was Sarah Osbourne whom was previously shunned by society for not regularly attending church. Here is a picture of her:
