Human Saliva Contains A Compound More Powerful Than Morphine

In need for some natural painkillers or just having a bad day? Well then you may just be able to spit on yourself, yes that is right human saliva contains a natural ingredient that is more powerful than morphine. In fact, the substance that scientists have found recently is actually six times more potent than morphine.

Researchers tested the new compound on rats and found that the natural painkiller worked extremely well. Natural painkillers are actually very rare and researchers are very excited to see if this will be a potential clinical treatment. Because natural painkiller can potentially provide patients with a way to treat their pain with relatively no side effects. Furthermore, synthetic elements such as morphine are known to be extremely addictive and cause a users tolerance to grow over time.

However, experts have mentioned that it will need to be tested thoroughly before we can know if it will be a successful painkiller or not. Called opiorphin, it seems to simply be able to bring cause the body’s natural defense against pain to become stronger. It is able to do this by blocking the pain signals from reaching the brain.

A team of researchers had originally found this natural chemical in rats and dubbed it sialorphin. This is what prompted them to check if the natural substance existed in humans. This is actually the first natural substance found in humans that does work on our pain system.

So far from testing on rats in pain situations, such as walking on pin covered surfaces, it appears the natural substance is working successfully to reduce pain. However, there has not yet been any finished drug or clinical trials so definitely have a long way to go before we see a natural painkiller made out of human saliva.
