Real Game of Thrones Filming Locations Across the World

King’s Landing

Built on the spot where the Targaryen’s began their conquest of Westeros, King’s Landing is the capital and largest city of the Seven Kingdoms. As home to the Iron Throne, it is the main center of power and the show, and thus the last place you would want to live.

Real Location: Dubrovnik, Croatia

In real life, the honor of portraying King’s Landing from Season 2 onward goes to the city of Dubrovnik. To be more specific, it is the district known as Old Town.

Long a center of Mediterranean commerce, this Croatian city has a few things in common with its fictional counterpart. For one thing, any army never breached its medieval walls. That has not stopped it from going through its upheaval though.

While no one has actually blown up a church with wildfire, Old Town sustained substantial damage in the wars following the break-up of Yugoslavia. Thankfully, it’s been restored since then, and Old Town remains a favorite tourist spot.
