Little Known Facts About Native American History

Pocahontas Never Fell In Love With John Smith

When John Smith arrived, Pocahontas was only around 8 years old. When she became older, she first married a young Native American warrior. Then after he died, she married again but this time to an English settler named John Rolfe.

Disney and many textbooks say otherwise, but the truth is, Pocahontas was never in love with John Smith. According to “The True Story of Pocahontas” written by the Mattaponi Tribe, her first husband was killed and after she remarried, she went by Rebecca Rolfe. The marriage between John Rolfe and Pocahontas was the first recorded interracial marriage in American history.
