The largest members of the rodent family, South America’s capybara can be found living in savannas and wooded area near bodies of water. These massive rodents can grow up to weigh 170 pounds! They make a variety of sounds that includes purring, barking and even squealing like pigs.


As a pet, capybaras are cute and curious, but they can also be a lot of work. They need fresh air, plenty of clean grass for grazing, and large water-filled area, like a swimming pool. Not only are they excellent swimmers, as evident by their webbed feet, but they need the water because their very dry skin needs constant hydration.
