A popular pet for reptile lovers, the bearded dragon hails from the deserts of Australia. Bearded dragons are relatively new to the United States’ exotic pet market, having made their U.S. debut in the 1990s. Special UV lighting and heat is necessary to take care of these gentle lizards, as they’re used to being exposed to the sun most of the time, so the cost to take care of them can add up.
Pet owners are drawn to the bearded dragon because they are calm, outgoing, and friendly. In captivity, they typically live between 6 to 10 years old but the oldest documented bearded dragon lived to 20 years old.
