Escaping Prison To See The Dentist

Samuel Reason | December 3rd, 2018

In terms of great escapes, this is definitely an odd one, one would think if you were to escape prison it would be to retrieve your freedom and just to keep on running. But for one inmate in Sweden the stakes were much different: in fact, it had to do with a toothache and nothing to do with freedom.

As we know toothaches are some of the worst pains that humans can witness, with all the nerve points that are present in your gums on the pain factor it can be excruciating and many people are unable to sleep when suffering from a toothache. For one 51-year-old Swedish inmate the pain was just too much to bear, with a 1-month sentence coming to an end he could no longer take the ache. With just one day left on his sentence, he decided it was better to escape and go see the dentist himself.

So after taking the daring escape and receiving the medical care required, he then turned himself back into the police after his tooth was treated. The incredible thing? His sentence was originally one month and for this escape, it was only increased by one day. He was quoted by the Dagens Nyheter newspaper to have complained for days to the prison officials but his complaints fell to death ears.

Was this the weirdest reason for a breakout? That is, of course, a tough question to answer, in 2012 a yoga master in Japan was able to simply slip through the food slot of a prison cell & walk out! And of course, there is the infamous story in 1975 when an American was serving a long sentence in Mexico due to drug charges was able to escape out of prison by disguising himself up as a woman.
