AF1 Was Once a Spy Plane
No one was taking any chances during the Cold War so, in 1959, then-CIA director, Allen Dulles, had Air Force One outfitted like a James Bond spy plane. For a brief time, hidden cameras were installed in the airplane’s wheel wells.
According to the CIA, these cameras were so state-of-the-art that they could clearly read a license plate on a car from 29,000 feet up in the air. Pretty impressive for 1959 technology.
