A Canadian Bar Where Your Whiskey Is Served With A Frostbitten Toe

When it comes to drinking games and challenges, many of us are always up to take on the next one. Though the challenge that happens in one bar in Canada, may well just be your limit. If you happen to find yourself in Dawson City, Canada; then be sure to visit the Downtown Hotel.

At the famous hotel, you will be able to order a cocktail that is one of a kind: the Sourtoe Cocktail. And you better be prepared to take that name literally, because this bar was not messing around when they mixed up this cocktail. The $5 drink is actually a shot of whiskey with a real frostbitten human toe inside your glass: as your garnish, of course.

The extremely popular drink has been served since 1973 when the bar owner found the frostbitten toe of Louie Linken, an infamous rum runner, preserved in a jar of alcohol and decided to bring it to the bar.

They actually provide people who complete the challenge with a certificate, that you can show off your bravery of drinking a beverage with a real human toe inside it and apparently the drink has been served over 100,000 times. And of course they are rules, which the pub chants in unison as the challenger takes the glass:

“You can drink it fast, you can drink it slowly, but your lips must touch the toe.”

And the other rule is as you may have thought: don’t swallow the toe. Funnily enough, this second rule is harder to abide with patrons swallowing toes by accident left and right. The bar installed a $2,500 fine just to ensure people would take more care – especially after some strange people started to swallow them on purpose! Luckily for the bar owner, in Canada, there is never a shortage of frostbitten toes and they receive a steady supply of donated toes.
