The 20 Most Important Events in Human History

The Sea Peoples

It’s an often-overlooked part of history, but the emergence (and sudden disappearance) of the Sea Peoples in the years between 1276 and 1178 BCE were a fascinating time. The origin of the people is still clouded in mystery, but they appeared very suddenly in the Mediterranean and began to ravage the coastal cities. No one seemed to be able to stand up to them and they were partly responsible for the burgeoning cultures of the time.

It’s hard to quantify the importance of the Sea Peoples as the only real records we have of their existence come from scattered Egyptian writings, in which they’re described as an unstoppable fighting machine. What we do know is that before they arrived, there were many cities and cultures in Greece, Turkey, and North Africa. After the sea peoples, these people were no more.
